Position Summary:

Responsible for the preparation of news releases and other media relations efforts. Covers campus events and other newsworthy activities to promote good relations between faculty, staff, students, and the community. Advises the Director of College Relations regarding college/ public relations opportunities.

Job Functions:

Prepares news releases for distribution to local media Interviews faculty, staff, students and administrators for inclusion in news releases Writes for a variety of college marketing materials and publications, assisting in promotion and placement of LSC-UP stories in appropriate print/electronic media Serves as secondary college contact for media queries; furnishes information about the college, and assists reporters with stories as requested Serves as assistant editor of college publications Takes appropriate photographs to accompany articles for publications and news releases Assists in planning and implementing a college marketing plan for program publicity and promotion Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Excellent writing, grammar, proofreading, and editing skills Effective public relations, interpersonal, verbal and oral communication skills Ability to use 35 mm digital camera Ability to work and communicate professionally at all times and develop and maintain working relationships with a diverse group of individuals Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers, related word-processing, website and graphic-design software and hardware, with the ability to learn new software programs Demonstrated organizational, time management and multitasking skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment with attention to detail Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and work on projects independently Ability to problem solve, exercise sound judgment and maintain a professional, personable demeanor at all times

Salary:

$16.66 per hour

Work Schedule & Conditions:

Travel to campuses (7) within district and local community outreach events may be required Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

Qualifications



Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, English or related field and at least three years of related work experience, including two or more years of experience in daily newsgathering and dissemination for print/electronic media Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge of Associated Press style and working knowledge of Chicago and APA styles Public relations experience in a non-profit or higher education setting Accredited in Public Relations (APR) Familiarity in advertising, marketing, magazine production and resource database management
