(NLP) is seeking a full-time Senior Manager of Media Relations to support the organization’s earned media efforts. There is intense public interest in NLP’s work, and we are experiencing tremendous growth. This is a great opportunity for you to help expand the reach of an influential education nonprofit as it addresses one of the most critical issues of our time and to have your work be appreciated by the media, educators, education leaders and the general public across the United States and around the world.
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following:
- Five to seven years of experience in communications, public relations, public affairs or journalism.
- Track record of successfully placing stories, op-eds and other content in national, state and local media outlets.
- The ability to recognize and tell compelling stories.
- Unafraid to try to find new and creative ways to reach journalists and the public.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- The ability to speak Spanish and communicate with diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of social media platforms and how to use them in your work.
- Strong contacts and relationships with journalists – especially education writers.
- Strong and proactive interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience with virtual work environment (both technology tools and personal skills).
This person should have a strong passion for our mission, be willing to find new ways to advance NLP’s brand and maintain a sense of humor while working well both independently and collaboratively.

Founded in 2008, the News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that empowers educators to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the Checkology® virtual classroom, an online e-learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in 2016, more than 25,000 teachers have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four U.S. territories and 112 other countries. About the position
As a member of NLP’s communications team, you will spend most of your time pitching stories and interview opportunities for NLP, building relationships with members of the press for future pieces, and helping our team improve our messaging. You’ll work on communications strategies to raise awareness of our mission and impact, assist the development team with messaging and constituent engagement, and amplify our message across multiple channels. You will join the communications team’s efforts to connect journalists, educators, donors, partners and other key constituencies with our work. You will collaborate with NLP’s education, creative services, administrative and development teams, as well as communications colleagues, to advance our work and support our strategic goals. You’ll hit the ground running, be ready to experiment and be a highly motivated self-starter who displays personal integrity and positive influence.
In addition, you will be responsible for:
- Writing pitches and making calls to follow up with journalists.
- Handling media interview requests (responding to request, booking/confirming, preparing interviewee, drafting talking points, etc.)
- Leading education trade media pitching
- Researching, maintaining and updating media contact lists
- Tracking media placements and scoring them
- Assisting with crisis comms response
- Providing research support for podcast
- Being co-backup to social media manager
- Occasionally writing and editing op-eds and other content and working with the team to target and place them.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the experience and skills noted at the beginning of this job description, the successful candidate will also have all or most of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five to seven years of relevant experience.
- Deep knowledge of the news media ecosystem.
- Relationships with and contacts at mainstream, diverse and alternative media outlets.
- Knowledge of digital and emerging social media trends.
- Superior written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to translate jargon and technical language into compelling copy.
- Familiarity with AP style.
- Ability to operate effectively under deadline pressure.
- Fluent Spanish speaker.
- Experience and comfort with working in a virtual work environment (in terms of both technology tools and personal skills).
- Knowledge of the state of misinformation today is a plus.
Very occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Compensation and benefits
