Key Accountabilities

  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and act competently on his/her own.
  • Knowledge of distribution and transmission gas system is preferred.
  • General knowledge of welding and oxy-acetylene cutting methods is preferred.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Must be able to use various measuring instruments, i.e., ruler, level, protractor, combination square, etc. and have a working knowledge of fundamental mathematics.
  • Must have knowledge of steel pipe fittings.
  • Must have basic knowledge of metallurgy.
  • Must have general knowledge of piping layouts and able to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Must pass API-1104 and ASME welding qualification tests within set forth training schedule.
  • Must pass required NYC FDNY certificate of fitness tests and operator qualification tests upon completion of training.
  • Must pass company eye test, medical exam and respirator fit testing prior to the start of training.
  • 5 year progression.
  • Assist journeyman welders throughout progression while working towards acquiring skills necessary to attain personal certification.
  • Work under direct supervision of journeyman welder and/or Supervisor performing basic welding (service tee attachments, thread-o-lets etc.) on distribution piping
  • Incumbent can be re-classified to Welder 'A' during latter progression stages (e.g. Year 4 and 5)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • The candidate shall have excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of above duties.
  • Clean, valid State CDL License required
  • WELDER 'A' QUALIFIED Job Qualifications (additional requirements):
  • Work independently in the performance of routine welding operations.
  • Lead two man welding team.
  • Acquire in-service (7018) certification for transmission mains.
  • Proficient in field layout and set-up for complex welding installations
  • MASTER WELDER Job Qualifications (additional requirements):
  • Train/mentor apprentice and junior welders.
  • Catalog jobs and monitor progress schedules.
  • Reconcile project materials and associated CMTRs.
  • Review project weld books and documentation on a routine basis.
  • Work with L and D and industry experts to develop Welding Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) and associated Weld Procedure Specifications (WPSs) to acquire same.
  • Interface with stakeholders during the performance of hydrostatic tests and other supervised activities in the shop.
  • Notes: In order to proceed in the process, candidates are required to pass pre-employment assessments including a demonstration of job skills, background check and drug/alcohol/physical screening.
  • In addition to possessing the qualifications for this vacancy, employees selected will be expected to work overtime in accordance with departmental requirements and to participate in the Company's Emergency Restoration Program as may be required.
  • Employees selected for this classification will be required to participate in federally mandated drug testing programs prior to selection, randomly on a year-round basis, after an accident and for reasonable cause.
