National Grid is hiring a Lead Environmental Scientist for our Environmental Compliance, Licensing, and Permitting department in Buffalo, NY.

Job Purpose

The role holder will be responsible for managing National Grid’s environmental licensing and permitting activity for projects in order to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental requirements.  This includes ensuring applicable local, state, and federal environmental requirements are established, communicated and implemented for high value, complex activities, including project initiation, design and construction.  

Key Accountabilities

  • Effectively communicate with peers and regulators.
  • Possess a strong sense of purpose in your work.
  • Review electric, gas and plant facility capital improvement projects and facility modifications to evaluate potential impacts on the environment and the need for regulatory permits and/or authorizations.
  • Oversee National Grid’s field operations, including the management and documentation of site visits, in order to monitor and facilitate compliance with applicable local, state, federal and company requirements.   
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with Operations, Engineering, Construction and other personnel in order to share best practice and communicate business decisions.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding current and proposed federal, state and local regulations and National Grid’s Environmental Procedures in order to ensure National Grid is compliant with environmental legislation and regulations. 
  • Train and motivate engineering and specific corporate-based personnel to comply with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations, and National Grid’s Environmental Procedures.  This includes providing technical guidance, support and coaching to share knowledge and develop technical understanding of environmental requirements. 
  • Successfully manage project permitting.


  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and relevant industry experience. 
  • 10+ years related environmental experience. Extensive and significant knowledge of environmental licensing and permitting regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation. Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
