PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Accountant III, payroll reports directly to the Senior Manager, Accounting but works closely with the Payroll team. This position performs accounting activities that include journal entry preparation, complex general ledger payroll account reconciliations, and ensuring financial accuracy. Prepares, reviews and analyzes payroll reports. Ensures proper accounting of payroll related transactions. Works with the payroll team to resolve discrepancies between Payroll submodules and general ledger. Assists in payroll audits and annual external audit. Develops and recommends process and procedure changes. Performs internal and external reporting. Serves as lead accountant for Payroll.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Reconciles various payroll accounts on a monthly basis; responsible for reviewing and monitoring Payroll general ledger accounts and notifying appropriate area of any needed corrections, prepares journal entries, and performs analysis of Payroll balance sheet accounts
Prepares and submits timely and accurate financial Payroll reports to internal and external constituents
Translates technical guidance received from various regulatory agencies into usable information applicable to assignments; ensures compliance with GAAP, GASB, board policy, and local, state and federal regulations and policies; evaluates and assesses impact of regulatory changes to processes and procedures required by internal policy changes or external regulators
Prepares accrual calculations for the College's benefit plans and paid time off
Reconciles the subsidiary records to the general ledger for Payroll accounts
Prepares year-end entries and audit schedules; provides supporting documentation as required by internal and external audits
May work with the Office of Technology Services on system errors that develop within accounting related modules, as well as projects to implement or upgrade modules as needed
Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Broad knowledge of general accounting principles, practices, and procedures
Broad knowledge of statutory requirements pertaining to payroll
Excellent knowledge of PC's and related software (especially Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, and Access)
Excellent verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills
Attention to detail and ability to cope with several tasks simultaneously
Ability to work independently and with others
Self-starter that is able to plan, organize and take initiative to meet objectives and deadlines independently
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
Equipment used includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment
Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience must include 3 years in Accounting
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with an accounting emphasis
