Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Captain for its Sludge Boat. The selected candidate will be responsible for commanding an assigned vessel and its crew, and performing related work such as exercising independent judgment, piloting the vessel, and maintaining proper upkeep of the vessel. The candidate will also be required to instruct junior officers and crew in the proper performance of their duties and prepare them for assumption of higher duties.

Requirements

  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) issued by the United States Coast Guard with endorsement as a Master of Self-Propelled Vessels of Unlimited Tonnage Upon Inland Waters or higher license
  • Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP) issued by the Federal Communications Commission, or higher radio operator license
  • Valid First Class Pilot's License on all waters sailed by the department's sludge boats within a year following appointment
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the U.S. Transportation and Security Administration
  • Ability to pass a medical examination and a drug screening
  • Random drug testing
