The Deputy District Engineer assists in management and engineering oversight of a geographically specific area in Texas, including transportation planning, operations, and maintenance of highways and bridges. The role requires extensive contact with business and community leaders, contractors, and government officials. The Deputy District Engineer reports to the District Engineer and exercises professional and independent judgment in overseeing district programs.

The Deputy District Engineer will assist in the development of work programs, act as a consultant to other staff members, and assist in resolving engineering and problem issues. The role may also involve directing operations of a regional surveillance, communication, and traffic control center, and supervising professionals in specific district functional areas.
