Job Description
This position is for a License Specialist in a Field Operations Field office of the Driver License Division. The job involves performing moderately complex licensing and permitting work, receiving and reviewing applications, ensuring compliance with policies and laws, communicating with customers, and approving license and permit applications. The position requires a valid driver's license, certification as a Commercial Knowledge Examiner, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Meets and deals with the general public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Answers general questions pertaining to driver licenses and identification cards, traffic laws, and driver education
  • Receives and reviews original and permit applications, duplicates, modifications, and renewals
  • Determines the legal needs and requirements of driver license and identification card applicants
  • Screens application forms to ensure applicant qualification
  • Approves applications for license and permits based on state regulations and agency policies
  • Provides interpretation of licensing and permitting requirements and applicable agency and statutory requirements
  • Performs basic checks of physical driving capabilities of applicants
  • Inspects motor vehicles for safety prior to road tests
  • Verifies evidence of financial responsibility and checks for registration and/or reciprocity
  • Makes and properly interprets National Driver Records and other external system inquiries
  • Issues licenses and permits, collects license fees, and prepares receipts
  • Captures photographs and signatures of applicants and inputs license and permit applications into computer systems
  • Advises applicants of suspensions, cancellations, and revocations, and advises how to qualify
  • Administers written, oral, or other tests to license permit applicants
  • Schedules applicants for driving tests and operates automated testing machines
  • Conducts comprehensive examinations to determine qualifications/limitations
  • Observes applicant during road tests, scores abilities, and informs applicant in person of pass/fail status
  • Recommends official actions to correct/rehabilitate drivers, accepts responsibility for recommendations
  • Provides administrative and technical assistance to the general public and agency staff
  • May provide on-the-job training for coworkers
  • May travel to work in other Driver License Offices and/or to and from Headquarters for training
  • May set up, close, and program office machines
  • Prepares daily bookkeeping reports and may make minor repairs to testing devices and other office equipment
  • Maintains work area and testing devices daily and may be required to provide own transportation to remote locations
