Role Overview

The General Counsel II performs complex legal work in the Office of General Counsel, managing a diverse legal portfolio and serving as the strategic point of contact for agency litigation. The attorney provides litigation support, delivers ongoing legal guidance to various programs, and briefs executive staff. The role requires collaboration with program experts, staff, and external litigation counsel on Unemployment Insurance matters, Texas Payday Law wage claims, and general litigation.

What You Will Do

The General Counsel II will collaborate with external counsel to defend agency positions and initiate legal actions, provide litigation support and legal analysis for lawsuits involving Unemployment Insurance matters and Texas Payday Law wage claims, and prepare and deliver monthly litigation reports.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar Association and admission to the State Bar of Texas
  • Three (3) years of experience in the full-time practice of law, or three years of full-time experience in a responsible position involving legal work as a primary duty
  • Active license to practice law in the State of Texas (in good standing with the State Bar of Texas)
  • Three to five years of experience working directly with the Unemployment Insurance (UI) administrative legal process and applicable legal authority
  • Experience providing litigation support, formulating case strategy, and acting as a primary point of contact and strategic partner with external legal counsel
