Job Description
Job Summary: Provides safe and effective patient care to Intravenous Outpatient Department patients. Uses the nursing process to determine care needs, plan to address those needs, and determine desired outcomes. Assesses the patient for learning needs and provides education and support as indicated. Supports and participates in performance and quality improvement activities within the IVOP department.

Requirements

  • Treats all patients with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
  • Implements service recovery as needed to promote patient satisfaction.
  • Keeps patient informed of treatment or physician delays. Adjusts schedule as needed.
  • Assists in the development of action plans to address patient concerns identified in the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey.
  • Takes responsibility for his/her work. Functions as a team member.
  • Conducts self in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Uses critical thinking and makes responsible decisions regarding patient care.
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff to the IVOP.
  • Orients and mentors nursing students rotating through the IVOP Department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in giving and receiving patient assignments.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Completes all paperwork with accuracy and completeness.
  • Possesses the necessary computer skills to effectively document patient care.
  • Knows and demonstrates proper safety practices related to Intravenous Therapy and Oncology Nursing practice.
  • Follows universal precautions and aseptic technique in provision of patient care.
  • Uses proper lifting techniques.
  • Knows location of emergency equipment.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of the workspace.
  • Assumes responsibility for promoting a team spirit within the department. Functions as a resource to other Frederick Health departments regarding care requirements for IVOP patients.
  • Models positive interpersonal skills for co-workers with one another and patients.
  • Actively participates in project teams, task forces, and committee assignments as needed.
  • Assesses the biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, symptom management, nutrition, and pain level of all patients using the Nursing Process to determine care needed and to evaluate outcomes.
  • Efficiently organizes and prioritizes patient care.
  • Uses knowledge, experience, and critical thinking skills to identify and meet patient care needs.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to the Care Manager, dietician, and Pain CNS as indicated.
  • Continually assesses these vital areas of concern for the IVOP patient throughout the course of treatment.
  • Documents changes and informs physician.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered.
  • Keeps physician informed of patient changes & concerns.
  • Serves as a resource person and patient advocate.
