Requirements

  • Prioritize incoming specimens and process patient specimens in accordance with department safety and OSHA guidelines
  • Draw blood samples from patients based on physicians order and in accordance with departmental safety and OSHA guidelines
  • Generate and attach labels to specimen/blood samples
  • Verify patient identification and ensure specimen integrity
  • Accurately enter and review laboratory test data in the laboratory computer system
  • Communicate with patients to explain procedures and/or answer routine questions from physicians, nurses, or other appropriate healthcare professionals
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area and stock storage area with supplies and inventories as necessary
  • Perform transportation duties, including delivering specimens and reports
  • Conduct routine inspection, maintenance and quality control checks on equipment
  • Prepare the patient for and/or administer tolerance tests or other tests specific to assigned area
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties, including answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, maintaining records, or relaying a message to the appropriate personnel
  • Self-monitor individual work behavior and performance to make improvements
  • Comply with departmental safety policies and procedures and OSHA guidelines, including the use of applicable personal protective equipment
