Role Overview

We are seeking a Lactation Consultant to provide counsel to patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Lactation Consultant will make assessments and provide guidance on breastfeeding issues, and assist in the development and teaching of lactation education to nursing and medical staff.

What You Will Do

The Lactation Consultant will make assessments in person or on the phone, provide guidance on breastfeeding issues, and make referrals to the interdisciplinary team. They will also assist in the development and teaching of lactation education.

This role requires a strong understanding of lactation physiology, breastfeeding techniques, and basic and complicated lactation problem-solving techniques. The ideal candidate will be able to effectively communicate with mothers and their companions, and have knowledge of teaching and learning principles.

Requirements

  • Completion of a healthcare related program (e.g. physician, physician assistant, registered nurse or respiratory therapy)
  • Two years' experience in same or similar role in lieu of completion of healthcare related program
  • Currently certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or will be in 6 months
  • Demonstrates at the time of employment and every two years thereafter, competency in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Knowledge of lactation physiology, breastfeeding techniques, basic and complicated lactation problem-solving techniques
  • Ability to effectively communicate to all ages of mothers and their companions
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning principles
