Role OverviewThe Landmarks Preservationist will work within a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to improving transportation in the city through various transportation infrastructure projects. The candidate will participate in planning, organizational, and policy determinations in the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) as they apply to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 800 (36 CFR 800), and Section 14.09 of the New York State Historic Preservation Act. The candidate will assist with drafting legal agreements, preparing and executing mitigation measures, and preparing historic resource analyses for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
What You Will Do
The candidate will review related work and documents provided by consultants to ensure that submission information is comprehensive and accurate. The candidate will help establish priorities and liaison with Federal and State agencies; formulate regulations, standards, plans and programs related to Historic Preservation as they relate to NYC DOT; and formulate, organize and supervise investigations related to these matters.
Why It Might Be a Fit
The candidate should have experience with historic resources and regulatory compliance. Familiarity with archeological resources, National Register of Historic Places eligibility, and section 4(f) procedures is preferred but not required.
Requirements
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture or American history
- one year of full-time satisfactory experience working in the fields of preservation, restoration or conservation of historic structures
- or conducting research in architectural or art history
- or working as an architect or architectural assistant
- or teaching college level courses in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture or American history
