Role Overview

Fitters are skilled tradespeople who read and interpret blueprints to place, maneuver, or fabricate steel structures or hulls of ships. They use various tools to measure, cut, grind, fit, align, and tack weld parts. Fitters build interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc., to complete all the steel work in the ship.

What You Will Do

Work with lead, perform structural surface preparation, and use a heating torch to liquidize lead for bonding lead to steel structures. Climb ladders, work at extreme heights, and perform tasks in all kinds of weather conditions.

Why It Might Be a Fit

Must have experience in construction work, carpentry, auto mechanic or autobody work, or structural iron work. Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at extreme heights
  • Must be able to work in small, tight, or confined spaces
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more
  • Must be able to work while repeatedly reaching overhead
  • Must be able to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to take and pass a respirator fit test
  • Must be able to take and pass a Physical Agility Test
  • Must be able to take measurements or be willing to learn
