Role Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Materials & Processes Engineer to join the JETS II contract with ERC, a teammate company, supporting NASA's pursuits in deep space exploration. As NASA's largest engineering solutions provider, we work together with NASA at centers across the United States.

What You Will Do

Advise, guide, and provide consultation on requirements for Materials & Processes (M&P) for intravehicular (IVA) and extravehicular (EVA) environments, including materials selection, process control, and qualification. Assist with M&P tasking including creating Materials Usage Agreements (MUAs), Materials Identification and Usage Lists (MIUL), Oxygen compatibility assessments, review engineering drawings and testing plans. Provide input to program/project specifications and ensure appropriate materials requirements are incorporated into all program/project specifications at the right level.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D.) in Engineering in the following areas: Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace.
  • 5 or more years of related work experience with materials and processes.
  • Knowledge in materials and processes for space applications, including materials selection (metallics and nonmetallics), design for corrosion prevention and electrical bonding, failure analysis, heat treatment, adhesive bonding, contamination control, etc.
  • Knowledge in metallurgy including aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, etc.
  • Familiar with requirements for contamination control and verification methods for space hardware.
  • Familiar with metallic and nonmetallic materials specifications, properties, testing.
  • Knowledge in engineering drawing review for materials and processes.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to critically assess manufacturing/material processes and designs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a multidisciplinary field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
