Role Overview

The Ohio Department of Agriculture is seeking a motivated candidate for a Meat Inspector Trainee position. The successful candidate will work with top-notch experts to learn about agriculture and conduct inspections of registered meat plants, private, commercial slaughtering plants, and custom-exempt red meat and/or poultry processing facilities. The role involves enforcing state and federal sanitation, humane slaughter, meat processing, and food safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

What You Will Do

The Meat Inspector Trainee will perform ante mortem and postmortem inspections of carcasses, conduct visual examinations of live animals and/or poultry, and enforce sanitation and safety policies. The role also involves inspecting equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure acceptable sanitation levels, halting production for poor sanitation and/or non-compliance, and ensuring proper disposition of unfit and condemned products.

Requirements

  • 1 course in animal science, agribusiness, and/or food business management
  • 3 months experience in livestock industry/industrial meat and poultry processing
  • 1 course in biological sciences or chemistry (e.g., high school or college)
  • Ability to provide own transportation
