Role Overview

Peer Support Specialist provides emotional support, coaching, and training to individuals with serious mental illness, promoting self-determination, skills for mental and physical wellbeing, and access to community resources. The role requires a serious mental illness and living well in recovery, with a GED or high school diploma, and ability to complete 40-hour training within six months. The Specialist will work in-person in Spencer, Iowa, and must have reliable transportation and valid driver's license.

What You Will Do

Provide support to peers, assist in reaching and maintaining personal recovery goals, promote self-determination, and collaborate with individuals to develop and implement their individualized treatment plan.

Requirements

  • Have or have had a serious mental illness and be living well in recovery
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a GED or high school diploma
  • Ability to complete required 40-hour Peer Support Specialist training within six months of hire
  • Knowledge and understanding of the 'recovery' model of service delivery
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions
  • Reliable transportation
  • Valid Class C driver's license (or Class D for vehicles with a capacity of 8 or more)
  • State minimum liability insurance coverage
