Role Overview

The Safety Technician is responsible for the collection, segregation, and management of hazardous chemical wastes generated throughout a university and hospital setting, including clinics and research laboratories. Secondary responsibilities include the collection and management of hazardous pharmaceutical wastes, radiological wastes, universal wastes, and other related waste streams.

What You Will Do

Collect, segregate, and manage hazardous chemical wastes, perform work in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, communicate with the supervisor regarding policies and procedures, safely handle waste containers and materials, and work safely in environments ranging from standard office conditions to locations where immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheres may exist.

Why It Might Be a Fit

Must have knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous material management, basic knowledge of chemistry, understanding of basic chemical properties, ability to utilize computer technology, and functional oral and written communication skills.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, or a related field
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and manipulate 400 lb. drums
  • Physical ability to wear respiratory protection
