Job Description
Incumbent serves as Laborer for the Department of Sanitation. This job description is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all job functions performed. The following are essential duties for this position, performed with or without reasonable accommodation: Primary Empties trash cans and loads bags of trash onto back of Sanitation truck, as required Loads trash into packer on assigned routes. Serves as a laborer on trash, yard waste, and recycling crews. Inspects department vehicles and equipment, and performs weekly maintenance including washing, greasing, and checking fluid levels and tires. Ensures the cleanliness of collection sites by picking up stray pieces of refuse. Occasionally performs duties of Master Equipment Operator (MEO) as situations require. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment. Performs related duties as assigned. High school Diploma/ GED or combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Knowledge of City ordinances pertaining to refuse collection. Experience in shop mechanics and ability to perform basic inspections and maintenance on department vehicles and equipment. Difficulty of Work Incumbent performs duties which require frequent bending and lifting. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. 1,200 times in an 8-hour time period. Lift containers of multiple dimensions. Bend at waist 840 to 2,500 times per 10hour time period. Walk approximately 2 ½ - 4 miles per 10-hour time period. Step up and step down 15-18” (on back of truck) utilizing a grab bar (57” – 68” high) approximately 200-350 times per 10-hour time period. Remain standing for long periods of time during normal course of duties. Run/jog to catch up with trash and recycling vehicles. Endure frequent jolting, bumping, and vibrations of equipment. Incumbent performs majority of duties outside, in varying weather conditions (including temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees) and is periodically exposed to excessive noise, dirt, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Possible exposure to all types of weather (rain, snow, etc.) and temperature conditions (down to 10 degrees below zero) dust, dirt, mud, hazardous chemicals, potentially infectious substances, traffic, vehicle and equipment exhaust fumes and excessive noise Personal Work Relationships Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including co-workers, City and other government officials, community groups, and the general public.
