Role OverviewThe selected candidate will be responsible for performing legal duties for the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), including providing legal guidance, drafting and ensuring timely court documents, and representing ACS in matters related to custody of detained and/or placed youth. The role is part of the Policy, Legal and Compliance Unit, which serves as a liaison to the city courts, law enforcement, legal advocates, and the Office of General Counsel. The team strives to help families and young people by providing supportive services that are responsive to the needs of individual youth and families.
What You Will Do
The Legal Counsel will be responsible for responding to challenging and urgent legal concerns, providing legal opinions on practices, policies, and procedures, drafting and ensuring timely court documents, conducting research, and representing ACS in Family, Supreme, and other NYC courts. The role also involves attending meetings, providing legal technical assistance, and working with ACS’ Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to determine the impact and implications of proposed legislation.

Requirements
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar
- Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086)
- One year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment
- Two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment
