Role OverviewThe Special Education Teacher is responsible for assessing each student's individual needs, curriculum planning and development, and coordination of the classroom support staff. Certification for Grades 1st - 6th is required. The teacher will use standardized and non-standardized assessment tools to determine the current level of performance of each student. The teacher will also write IEP's, monthly progress notes, and weekly lesson plans.
What You Will Do
The classroom teacher will use assessment tools to determine student performance, coordinate instructional programs, write IEP's and progress notes, and maintain a structured environment. The teacher will also assist with toileting, feeding, and other student needs, and escort students to and from the bus.
Why It Might Be a Fit
The successful candidate will have the ability to work with students with developmental disabilities, have a Master's Degree in Special Education or a related field, and have NYS Teaching Certification. The candidate will also be able to push and pull students in wheelchairs, lift, bend, and perform other physical tasks with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Requirements
- Master's Degree in Special Education with NYS Teaching Certification
- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or a related field with graduate level coursework in Special Education and NYS Provisional Certification or Certificate of Qualification
- Valid NYS driver's license
- Ability to push and pull students in wheelchairs, lift, bend, squat, turn in the knees, pivot, and grasp with both hands
