Role OverviewLegal Aid DC is seeking an experienced staff attorney to join its Public Benefits Law Unit. The unit helps families and individuals overcome legal barriers to accessing essential safety net benefits. The attorney will report to a supervising attorney and engage in systemic policy advocacy and litigation on behalf of the client community.
What You Will Do
The attorney will handle a caseload of complex public benefits matters, engage in community outreach, written and oral advocacy, and policy advocacy. They will also help mentor and train less experienced attorneys.

Experience in DC public benefits programs or a closely related field is required, and litigation and/or advocacy experience is strongly preferred.
Requirements
- Membership or eligibility for membership in the DC bar is required
- A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
- Strong legal analysis, organizational, oral and written communication, and leadership skills
- The ability to work collaboratively with clients, Legal Aid staff, legal and social services providers in other organizations
- Two years of experience in DC public benefits programs or a closely related field
- Five or more years of legal experience in public benefits or related work preferred
- Litigation and/or advocacy experience strongly preferred
- Fluency or proficiency in Spanish, Amharic, or another language prevalent in Legal Aid DC’s client community preferred but not required
