PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Installs and maintains heating and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls and piping, using hand and power tools, and following specifications and blueprints.
• Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
• Cuts pipe using saw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
• Threads pipe, using saw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machines.
• Threads pipe, using pipe threading machines.
• Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine.
• Assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes and fittings. Connects pipes by welding.
• Connects pipes to structures with brackets, clamps and hangers, using hand and power tools.
• Secures pipes to structures with brackets, clamps and hangers, using hand and power tools.
• Test pipe system for leaks using approved methods and procedures.
• Insulate pipe and equipment.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Drives CTA vehicles in the performance of duties and responsibilities of this position.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass a physical examination and perform the physical activities associated with this position.
• Must possess a minimum of five (5) years of verifiable work experience as a Steamfitter or Pipefitter, EPA Certification of Refrigeration, or a combination of experience in Steamfitting and Heating and Air Conditioning.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Lifts, carries, and maneuvers material weighing up to 100 pounds.
• May stand, bend, stoop and kneel for extended periods of time.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Must possess a thorough knowledge of installation and servicing procedure for air conditioning and heating systems.
• Must possess a thorough knowledge of acceptable steamfitting/pipefitting practices and procedures.
• Must be skilled in the reading and interpretation of blueprints and schematic drawings.
• Required to be skilled in the use of various hand and power operated tools.
• Required to furnish certain hand tools.
• Must know how to “sweat” copper tubing and brazing.
• Must have a working knowledge of proper welding practices.
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Works outdoors in all types of weather.
• Works from ladders, scaffolds, scizzors and platform lifts...
• Works in confined areas.
• May work near or adjacent to energized conductors and moving vehicles.
• Travels throughout the CTA system.
