Temporary Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA)

The Temporary Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA) will assist in the instruction of disabled students in elementary and high schools, under the general direction of the school principal and the immediate supervision of a Special Education teacher. The SECA will perform related duties as required, including one-on-one tutoring, personal hygiene services, and assisting students with orthopedic impairments. The SECA will also accompany students to swimming pools and medical clinics, assist with feeding, and take notes in classrooms for students unable to do so themselves.

What You Will Do

The main day-to-day responsibilities of the SECA will include reinforcing efforts with children with various disabilities, providing one-on-one tutoring services, and assisting students with orthopedic impairments. The SECA will also assist teachers in instructing students in daily living skills, accompany students on field trips, and attend workshops and in-service training to update job-related skills.

Requirements

• Certification Requirements: Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)
• Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities
• Good knowledge of English grammar and spelling
• Good knowledge of basic mathematics
• Ability to work with and for students with various disabilities, ages birth to twenty-one (21) years of age
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and direction
• Ability to complete and maintain basic written reports
